Former electric utility serving approximately 470,000 customers in northwest Florida, founded in 1911 and operated as an independent utility under Southern Company until NextEra Energy acquired it in January 2019 for approximately $6.475 billion; Gulf Power was legally merged into Florida Power and Light (FPL) on January 1, 2022, and no longer exists as a separate operating entity.
