Takeda's non-purine selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor (febuxostat) for chronic gout, originally discovered by Teijin Pharma in Japan, FDA approved in February 2009, subject to a black box warning added in February 2019 for increased risk of cardiovascular death and all-cause mortality compared to allopurinol based on the CARES trial, with use now restricted to patients who have failed or cannot tolerate allopurinol.
