The origins of PSA International trace back to 1863, when Tan Kim Ching, Singapore's leading Chinese merchant at the time, funded the establishment of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company, the forerunner of today's Port of Singapore Authority. Under the 1912 Straits Settlements Port Ordinance, the Singapore Harbour Board was formed on July 1, 1913, to manage port operations.
On April 1, 1964, the Port of Singapore Authority was established under the 1963 Port of Singapore Authority Ordinance to replace the Singapore Harbour Board and several organizations operating in the port. The PSA was created as a statutory board, a government entity responsible for regulating, developing, operating, and promoting the Port of Singapore.
In the 1970s, Singapore's port began its rapid expansion as the city-state positioned itself as a global transshipment hub. Containerization transformed the shipping industry, and Singapore invested heavily in container terminal infrastructure. The PSA developed container terminals at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, and Brani, establishing Singapore as one of the world's busiest container ports.
The critical corporate transformation came in 1997. On August 25, a parliamentary bill was passed to corporatize the Port of Singapore Authority, converting it from a statutory board into an independent commercial company. PSA Corporation Ltd was corporatized on October 1, 1997. All regulatory functions were transferred to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, while PSA Corporation retained the commercial port operations. The brand name PSA was kept but was no longer an acronym.
In December 2003, PSA restructured again. PSA International Pte Ltd was established as the main holding company for the PSA Group of companies. This restructuring prepared the group for international expansion and created a corporate structure suitable for a global port operator.
PSA expanded internationally through the 2000s and 2010s. The company invested in terminal operations across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Flagship overseas operations include PSA Antwerp in Belgium, one of Europe's largest container terminals, and terminals in India, China, and other Asian countries. PSA also expanded into supply chain solutions, marine services, and digital businesses.
In December 2021, PSA International signed an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the shares of BDP International, a privately held logistics company, expanding its supply chain services beyond port operations. This acquisition reflected PSA's strategy to move beyond pure container handling into end-to-end logistics.
In 2025, PSA achieved record container throughput of 105 million TEUs across its global network, a 5 per cent increase over 2024. PSA Singapore terminals handled 44.5 million TEUs, while overseas terminals handled 60.4 million TEUs. Revenue reached S$8.3 billion, up 7 per cent year on year, with net profit of S$1.1 billion. The company also continued strategic portfolio moves, including considering taking a minority stake in CK Hutchison's ports business due to global trade and port consolidation trends.
