History of Indri

  • Founded: 2022
  • Founders: Piccadily Agro Industries Limited

Indri single malt whisky was launched in 2022 by Piccadily Agro Industries Limited. The whisky is produced at Piccadily's distillery in Indri, a town in the Karnal district of Haryana, India. The brand is named after the town where the distillery is located.

Indri is made using six-row Indian barley, according to Piccadily Agro. The whisky is distilled in copper pot stills and matured in a variety of cask types, including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry (Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez), and ex-wine casks. The distillery leverages India's warm climate, which accelerates the maturation process compared to Scotland. The angel's share (evaporation loss) is higher in India's climate, but the interaction between spirit and wood is more intense, producing a mature whisky in a shorter timeframe.

The brand launched its first expression, Indri Trini, which is a triple-cask single malt whisky aged in three types of casks. Trini means "three" in Hindi and Sanskrit. This was followed by Indri Dru (cask strength), named after the Sanskrit word for "wood," and Indri Agneya, named after the Sanskrit word for "fire."

Indri gained international recognition quickly. In 2023, Indri Dru (Cask Strength) won Gold at the Spirit Business Global World Whisky Masters. The brand's breakthrough came when Indri Dru was named "Best Indian Single Malt" at the World Whiskies Awards 2024, a historic milestone for Indian single malt whisky.

In 2024 and 2025, Indri expanded its product line with limited edition releases including the Diwali Collector's Edition, the Founder's Reserve 11YO, and the GOT: House of Black (a Game of Thrones-themed limited edition). The brand also introduced Indri Agneya, a peated single malt.

By 2025, Indri had become the fastest-growing single malt whisky brand globally, according to Piccadily Agro. The brand has accumulated over 50 international awards from prestigious spirits competitions.

In 2026, Indri continued its award streak. At the London Spirits Competition 2026, Indri Agneya was awarded 95 points and crowned "Indian Single Malt Whisky of the Year." At the Asian Spirits Masters 2026, Indri Trini and Indri Dru both won Master Awards, the competition's highest honor. At the International Whisky Competition 2026, Indri swept the top three positions in both the Best Indian Whisky and Best Single Malt Indian Whisky categories, with the Diwali Collector's Edition 2025 scoring 93.53 points, followed by Indri Dru Cask Strength at 90.87 points and Indri Agneya at 89.70 points.

Piccadily Agro reported total revenue of Rs 1,143 crore for fiscal year 2026 (ending March 31, 2026), driven by the expansion of its distillery and premium spirits business. The company expects 60-70% growth in FY2027, supported by the commissioning of its Chhattisgarh facility, which is expected to contribute Rs 300-400 crore in revenue.

Indri Sustainability & Ethics

Piccadily Agro Industries operates a combined sugar and distillery business. The company's sustainability practices span both segments. In the distillery segment, the company focuses on water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction.

The distillery uses extra neutral alcohol (ENA) and malt spirit production processes that generate byproducts. The company has implemented measures to manage these byproducts, including the use of spent grain as animal feed and the treatment of distillery effluent. The sugar business provides bagasse (sugarcane waste), which can be used as biomass fuel for energy generation.

Indri sources six-row Indian barley for its whisky production. The brand works with agricultural suppliers in India, though specific details about sourcing partnerships and sustainable farming practices are not publicly documented in detail.

As a publicly traded company, Piccadily Agro is subject to SEBI regulations regarding corporate governance and financial disclosure. The company files quarterly financial results and annual reports. However, Piccadily Agro does not publish a standalone ESG or sustainability report. Sustainability initiatives are discussed in the company's annual report but are not reported at the brand level for Indri.

The proposed demerger of the sugar business into Piccadily Food & Essential Limited will separate the company's alco-beverage operations from its sugar operations. This restructuring may improve transparency and focus on sustainability practices specific to each business.

Piccadily Agro does not hold independent sustainability certifications such as B Corp status. The company's environmental practices are governed by Indian regulatory requirements for distillery operations, including pollution control board standards for effluent treatment and emissions.

Awards & Recognition

Indri has accumulated over 50 international awards from prestigious spirits competitions, establishing itself as one of the most awarded Indian single malt whisky brands.

At the International Whisky Competition 2026, Indri swept the top three positions in both the Best Indian Whisky and Best Single Malt Indian Whisky categories. The Diwali Collector's Edition 2025 scored 93.53 points, followed by Indri Dru Cask Strength at 90.87 points and Indri Agneya at 89.70 points. Indri was the only Indian whisky to score above 90 points at the competition.

At the London Spirits Competition 2026, Indri Agneya was awarded 95 points and crowned "Indian Single Malt Whisky of the Year." This is one of the competition's highest distinctions.

At the Asian Spirits Masters 2026, Indri Trini and Indri Dru both won Master Awards, the competition's highest honor. This marked a clean sweep across multiple expressions.

At the World Whisky Awards 2025, Indri received multiple honors. The Indri Founder's Reserve 11YO won Gold as Category Winner in the Single Malt 12 Years & Under category. The Indri Refill Oloroso Sherry 03 won Gold as Category Winner in the Single Cask Single Malt NAS category. The Indri Diwali Collector's Edition 2024 won Silver in the Single Malt 12 Years & Under category.

At the New York International Spirits Competition 2024, Indri Trini won Gold in the Indian Whisky Up to 10 Years category, and Indri was named "India Whisky of the Year."

At the Miami Global Spirits Awards 2024, Indri Dru won "World Whisky Platinum" and "Best World Whisky" awards.

At the Las Vegas Global Spirit Awards 2024, the Founder's Reserve 11YO won Platinum, and the Diwali Collector's Edition 2024 was named "Best World Whisky."

Historically, Indri Dru was named "Best Indian Single Malt" at the World Whiskies Awards 2024, a milestone for Indian single malt whisky on the global stage.

Indri Recalls & Controversies

Indri has maintained a clean operational record with no product recalls. However, the brand operates in the highly regulated Indian alcohol industry, which presents ongoing compliance challenges.

The Indian alcohol industry is subject to complex regulations that vary by state. Each state has its own excise policies, licensing requirements, and distribution rules. Indri must navigate these varying regulations to sell its products across Indian states. While Indri has not faced specific regulatory violations, the broader regulatory environment presents ongoing challenges for all spirits brands operating in India.

Alcohol advertising is restricted or banned in many Indian states. This limits Indri's ability to market its products through traditional advertising channels. The brand relies on international awards, social media, and word-of-mouth to build awareness, which is a slower and less controlled approach than traditional advertising.

Indri faces challenges in establishing brand recognition in international markets dominated by traditional whisky-producing regions like Scotland, Ireland, and Japan. Consumer perceptions about Indian whisky quality remain a barrier, though Indri's extensive award record has helped overcome some of these biases.

The brand's premium pricing limits its market size in price-sensitive segments of the Indian spirits market. While justified by quality and awards, the premium price points restrict access to a smaller segment of consumers compared to mass-market whisky brands.

Piccadily Agro's sugar business has been under financial pressure, which has affected the consolidated company's performance. The proposed demerger of the sugar business is intended to address this by separating the alco-beverage operations from the sugar operations. Until the demerger is completed, the sugar business's performance will continue to be reflected in Piccadily Agro's consolidated financial results.

Geopolitical tensions could disrupt certain export markets or logistics, as noted by the company's CFO. This presents a risk to Indri's international expansion plans, particularly in markets affected by conflicts or trade restrictions.
