History of Hostinger

  • Founded: 2004
  • Founders: Arnas Stuopelis

Hostinger began in 2004 in Kaunas, Lithuania as Hosting Media, a small local web hosting business. The Lithuanian internet market was young, and the company started by providing basic hosting to domestic customers.

International expansion followed through adjacent brands. In 2007 the company launched 000webhost, a free hosting service that functioned as a customer acquisition funnel converting free users to paid plans. In 2008 it launched Hosting24 with data centers in the United States and United Kingdom. The 2011 rebrand to Hostinger consolidated the business under a single global identity, with Stuopelis taking over as CEO that year.

The defining growth strategy was localization for emerging markets. Rather than selling one global product at Western price points, Hostinger launched market-specific brands: Niagahoster for Indonesia in 2013 and Weblink for Brazil in 2014. These subsidiaries captured customers in markets where incumbent hosting providers were expensive and underserving local languages and payment methods.

The product line expanded beyond pure hosting. In 2019 it launched Zyro, a no-code drag-and-drop website builder later absorbed into Hostinger Website Builder, moving it into competition with Wix and Squarespace. The only significant outside investment came in 2021 when ConHostinger acquired a roughly 31 percent stake.

The 2020s brought leadership transition and an AI pivot. Jankus became CEO in 2023 with Stuopelis moving to chairman. In 2024 the company closed 000webhost after 17 years, ending the free-tier funnel. Through 2024 and 2025 it repositioned its platform around agentic AI for site building and business tools, driving revenue from €110.2 million in 2023 to €182.4 million in 2024 and €275.4 million in 2025, with the customer base expanding from 2.4 million to 4.6 million across that span.

Hostinger Sustainability & Ethics

Hostinger's sustainability posture covers data center efficiency and renewable energy sourcing consistent with European cloud infrastructure norms, though it holds no B Corp or equivalent independent certification. Its ethics profile is standard for the hosting industry, centered on uptime, data protection under GDPR, and abuse response for malicious content hosted on its infrastructure.

Hostinger Recalls & Controversies

No product recalls apply to a hosting service, and no major regulatory action is on record. The category-level issue that applies is infrastructure abuse: mass-market hosting is used by malicious actors for phishing and spam, a problem Hostinger addresses through standard abuse processes rather than something unique to the company. No material customer data breach is documented.
