History of Glassnote Records

  • Founded: 2007
  • Founders: Daniel Glass

Glassnote Records was founded in 2007 by Daniel Glass, a music industry executive who previously worked at major record labels including Chrysalis Records, SBK Records, and EMI. The company was established with a vision to create an artist-focused independent label that would compete with major labels while maintaining creative freedom.

Glassnote entered a market in which streaming was beginning to replace compact-disc sales and independent labels needed reliable digital distribution. Its 2008 agreement with RED, then Sony's independent distribution arm, gave the young label access to retail accounts without a sale of the business. Early signings included the Australian group The Temper Trap and the French band Phoenix.

Phoenix released Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix through Glassnote in the United States in 2009. The album won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More followed in the United States in 2010 and became a multiplatinum release. The band's second album, Babel, opened at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2012 and won Album of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards. Those releases gave Glassnote a catalog with continuing streaming and licensing income, not merely one successful release cycle.

The roster widened during the 2010s. Glassnote released music by Childish Gambino, including Camp, Because the Internet, and Awaken, My Love!; by Chvrches; by Two Door Cinema Club; by Daughter; and by Aurora in the United States or selected territories. Rights can differ by artist and country, a common feature of independent label agreements. A Glassnote release in one market does not prove that the label owns or controls the same recording worldwide.

In February 2014, Glassnote announced a global distribution agreement with Universal Music Group. Universal's distribution companies handled the label's releases while Glassnote remained independent. The company later worked with AWAL. In 2022, Glassnote announced that The Orchard would provide global distribution to its roster, returning its distribution relationship to the Sony Music group through a services company rather than an owned label.

Glassnote continued signing and releasing artists after that change. Its current site lists a roster and a New York staff covering finance, promotion, synchronization licensing, production, e-commerce, publicity, audience development, and United Kingdom and European activity. The operating team shows how a compact label can keep A&R and campaign management in house while purchasing distribution at global scale.
