History of WME

  • Founded: 1898
  • Founders: William Morris

WME's history begins in 1898, when William Morris, a German immigrant who had worked as a theatrical booking agent, founded the William Morris Agency in New York City. The agency started during the vaudeville era and grew as entertainment expanded into film, radio, and television. The William Morris Agency represented some of the most prominent entertainers in American culture, including Charlie Chaplin, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra.

Through the mid-20th century, the agency competed with the Music Corporation of America (MCA) and later with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which was founded in 1975 by agents who had left William Morris. CAA quickly grew to challenge William Morris's dominance in Hollywood.

In 1995, a group of agents who had left ICM founded a new agency called Endeavor in Beverly Hills. Ari Emanuel was among the founding partners and became the agency's most prominent figure. Endeavor grew rapidly through the late 1990s and 2000s, developing a reputation for aggressive deal-making.

In 2009, the William Morris Agency and Endeavor merged to form William Morris Endeavor (WME). The merger combined two major Hollywood talent agencies into a single entity. The merged agency was co-led by Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell.

In 2012, WME acquired IMG, a sports and media company, transforming the agency into a diversified sports and entertainment business. In 2016, the company acquired Zuffa, parent of UFC, for approximately $4 billion. In 2017, the company rebranded as Endeavor Group Holdings, with WME continuing as the talent representation division.

Endeavor completed its IPO on the NYSE in April 2021, trading under ticker EDR. The IPO raised approximately $528 million. In 2023, Endeavor merged UFC with WWE to create TKO Group Holdings, which began trading on the NYSE under ticker TKO.

In March 2025, Silver Lake completed the take-private transaction. Endeavor's representation businesses were rebranded as WME Group, and the Endeavor name was retired from public use. Ari Emanuel moved from CEO to Executive Chairman, while Mark Shapiro became President and Managing Partner. Patrick Whitesell exited to launch a new venture backed by $250 million from Silver Lake.

In late February 2025, TKO Group closed its acquisition of IMG, On Location, and PBR from Endeavor for $3.25 billion. Endeavor also sold OpenBet and IMG Arena to OB Global Holdings for $450 million in a management buyout led by Emanuel.

About Endeavor Group Holdings

Who owns Endeavor?
Endeavor Group Holdings is owned by Silver Lake Partners, a technology-focused private equity firm, which completed its acquisition on March 24, 2025. Silver Lake partnered with the Endeavor management team and additional co-investors. Shareholders received $27.50 per share in cash. Silver Lake had been an investor in Endeavor since 2012 and describes it as the single largest position in its global portfolio.

Does Endeavor own UFC and WWE?
Endeavor retains a controlling ownership stake in TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), which owns UFC and WWE. TKO was formed in September 2023 by combining UFC and WWE into a single publicly traded company. Endeavor does not directly own UFC or WWE; they are held through TKO, which trades independently on the NYSE.

Is Endeavor publicly traded?
No. Endeavor was taken private by Silver Lake Partners on March 24, 2025. It was previously traded on the NYSE under ticker EDR from April 2021 to March 2025. However, investors can gain exposure to Endeavor's sports properties through TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), which remains publicly traded.

What is WME?
WME (William Morris Endeavor) is Endeavor's flagship talent agency and one of the world's two dominant talent agencies alongside Creative Artists Agency (CAA). WME was formed in 2009 through the merger of the William Morris Agency (founded 1898) and Endeavor Talent Agency (founded 1995). WME represents actors, directors, musicians, writers, athletes, and brands across entertainment, sports, and media.

When was Endeavor founded?
Endeavor Talent Agency was founded in 1995 by Ari Emanuel and several colleagues who left ICM. The current Endeavor Group Holdings emerged from the 2013 acquisition of IMG by WME, with the Endeavor name adopted in October 2017.

What was the Silver Lake deal?
Silver Lake Partners completed its acquisition of Endeavor on March 24, 2025, taking the company private at $27.50 per share in cash. The total enterprise value was $25 billion when consolidating TKO's value, making it the largest private equity public-to-private transaction in over a decade and the largest ever in the media and entertainment sector. The deal represented a 55% premium to the unaffected share price of $17.72 on October 25, 2023.

What is TKO Group Holdings?
TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO) is a publicly traded sports and entertainment company formed in September 2023 by combining UFC and WWE. Endeavor holds a controlling ownership stake in TKO. The combination brought together the world's premier mixed martial arts promotion and the world's premier professional wrestling promotion under a single corporate entity valued at approximately $21 billion at formation.

WME Sustainability & Ethics

As a talent agency, WME's sustainability focus differs from manufacturing or consumer goods companies. Its environmental impact primarily relates to office operations, travel, and events.

Corporate Reorganization: Following the $25 billion take-private by Silver Lake in March 2025, Endeavor rebranded as WME Group, reflecting a renewed focus on representation businesses. Leadership changes included Ari Emanuel moving from CEO to Executive Chairman and Mark Shapiro becoming President and Managing Partner.

Diversity and Inclusion: WME has implemented programs to increase diversity within the entertainment industry, including initiatives to represent underrepresented voices and promote inclusive hiring practices. These efforts align with broader industry movements toward greater representation.

Ethical Business Practices: WME operates under ethical guidelines regarding client representation, contract negotiations, and industry relationships. The agency's practices are subject to industry regulations and professional standards governing talent representation.

Industry Influence: As one of the world's largest talent agencies, WME can influence sustainability practices across the entertainment industry. The agency represents clients who are vocal about environmental and social issues, creating opportunities to promote sustainable practices in film production, touring, and event management.

Awards & Recognition

WME receives recognition primarily through the success of its clients rather than formal industry awards for talent agencies.

Client Success: WME represents numerous award-winning clients across film, television, music, and sports. The agency's music division consistently represents ACM and CMA Award winners. Many WME clients have received Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, and other major industry recognitions.

Big Three Ranking: WME is consistently ranked among the "Big Three" talent agencies alongside CAA and UTA. This ranking reflects the agency's market position, client roster, and influence in the entertainment industry.

$25 Billion Transaction: The Silver Lake take-private transaction, valued at $25 billion when consolidating TKO's value, was recognized as the largest private equity sponsor public-to-private investment in over a decade and the largest ever in media and entertainment.

Heritage Recognition: WME's 127-year heritage through the William Morris Agency is recognized as one of the longest in the talent agency industry. The agency's founding in 1898 and its role in representing some of the most iconic entertainers in American culture are widely acknowledged.

WME Recalls & Controversies

2023 Hollywood Labor Strikes: The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 significantly impacted WME's operations. The strikes forced the agency to navigate complex negotiations and client management during industry-wide work stoppages. While Endeavor's Representation division revenue rose 5% to $427 million during this period, the strikes created uncertainty across the entertainment industry.

Talent Agency Competition: WME has faced scrutiny and occasional legal challenges related to talent recruitment and competition with other agencies. The competitive nature of talent representation sometimes leads to disputes over client poaching and recruitment practices.

Industry Consolidation: WME's role in entertainment industry consolidation, including the UFC-WWE merger under TKO Group, has faced criticism regarding potential market concentration. The agency's dominant market position raises questions about fair competition and impact on smaller agencies.

Leadership Transition: The March 2025 reorganization that moved Ari Emanuel from CEO to Executive Chairman while he continues as CEO of TKO Group raised questions about corporate governance. This complex arrangement reflects the challenges of managing a diverse portfolio across private (WME Group) and public (TKO Group) entities.

Patrick Whitesell Exit: Whitesell's departure from the company he co-led for over 20 years, while receiving $250 million from Silver Lake for a new venture, raised questions about the internal dynamics of the take-private transaction.

Asset Sales: Endeavor's sale of OpenBet and IMG Arena for $450 million and the transfer of IMG, On Location, and PBR to TKO for $3.25 billion represented significant restructuring. These transactions reduced Endeavor's direct ownership of certain businesses while concentrating focus on representation.
