History of Nando's

  • Founded: 1987
  • Founders: Fernando Duarte, Robert Brozin

Nando's began in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Fernando Duarte, a Portuguese-born Mozambican who had moved to South Africa, took his friend Robert Brozin to a Portuguese chicken restaurant called Chickenland in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville. The chicken was flame-grilled and basted in peri-peri sauce, a spicy chili sauce rooted in Portuguese and Mozambican culinary traditions. Duarte and Brozin loved it. They bought the restaurant for roughly 25,000 rand (then about $12,000 USD) and renamed it Nando's, after Duarte's son Nando.

The peri-peri chili is central to the Nando's story. Portuguese explorers encountered the chili in Mozambique during the colonial era. The word "peri-peri" comes from the Swahili "pilipili," meaning pepper. Portuguese settlers in Mozambique developed the sauce by combining the chili with garlic, lemon, oil, and herbs. When Duarte brought the recipe to Johannesburg, it was virtually unknown outside Portuguese-Mozambican communities.

The first Nando's was a small takeaway. Duarte and Brozin kept the flame-grilled chicken concept and the peri-peri sauce but added their own touches. They introduced the "heat scale" system, letting customers choose how spicy their chicken would be. This was a simple but effective marketing innovation that became a signature part of the Nando's experience.

In 1989, Nando's began expanding within South Africa through company-owned and franchised locations. The brand grew steadily through the early 1990s, despite the political turbulence of apartheid's end. The peri-peri chicken concept was distinctive enough to stand out in a fast food market dominated by American chains like KFC and McDonald's.

The Enthoven family entered the picture in the early 1990s. Dick Enthoven, who had made his fortune in insurance through the Hollard Group, invested in Nando's through Yellowwoods Group. His son Robby Enthoven moved to London in 1993 to open the first UK location. The UK launch was the turning point.

The first UK Nando's opened in Ealing, West London, in 1992. It started as a takeaway. Robby Enthoven realized that the UK market wanted a different experience. He shifted the model from takeaway to counter-ordering with table service. Customers would order at the counter, then sit down and have their food brought to them. This hybrid model, somewhere between fast food and casual dining, became known as "fast casual" and was years ahead of the trend.

The UK business grew rapidly. By 2000, there were around 40 Nando's in the UK. By 2010, there were over 200. The brand became a cultural phenomenon in Britain. "Going for a Nando's" entered the vernacular. The restaurant's peri-peri sauces became supermarket staples. Nando's UK now operates over 450 restaurants and is the brand's largest market.

Expansion continued globally. Nando's entered Australia in 1990, Canada in 1994, the United States in 2008, and many other countries. The US expansion has been slower than the UK. As of 2026, Nando's has approximately 40 locations in the United States, concentrated in the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, with newer locations in Chicago and other cities.

Nando's also built a grocery business. Bottled peri-peri sauces, marinades, and cooking sauces are sold in supermarkets across more than 35 countries. The grocery operation runs separately from the restaurant business through Nando's Grocery International.

In 2022, Dick Enthoven died at age 86. The family ownership structure remained intact. No sale or IPO followed. The business continues under family control with professional management.

As of 2026, Nando's operates over 1,200 restaurants across 30 countries. The UK is the largest market with approximately 450 locations. South Africa has approximately 300. Australia has over 300. The remaining locations are spread across the US, Canada, the Middle East, Asia, and other markets.

About Nando's Group Holdings Limited

Who owns Nando's?
Nando's is owned by the Enthoven family through Yellowwoods Group, their private holding company. The family acquired a controlling stake in the early 1990s, with Dick Enthoven leading the investment. Dick Enthoven died in 2022, and the family retains ownership through a network of holding companies and trusts registered in multiple jurisdictions. Nando's is not publicly traded on any stock exchange.

Is Nando's publicly traded?
No, Nando's is not publicly traded. The company is privately owned by the Enthoven family through Yellowwoods Group. As a private company, Nando's does not publish consolidated global financial statements. Its UK entity (Nando's Limited) files accounts with Companies House, which provide some financial visibility for the UK market.

When was Nando's founded?
Nando's was founded in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa, by Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin. The two friends visited a Portuguese chicken restaurant called Chickenland in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville and were so impressed by the peri-peri chicken that they decided to buy the restaurant. They renamed it Nando's, after Duarte's son Nando.

How many Nando's restaurants are there?
Nando's operates over 1,300 restaurants across approximately 30 countries as of 2025. The United Kingdom is the largest market by restaurant count, with over 480 restaurants. Other major markets include South Africa, Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

What is Nando's revenue?
Nando's does not publicly disclose its global revenue as a private company. However, its UK operations reported revenue of approximately GBP 1.2 billion in 2024, making Nando's one of the largest restaurant chains in the UK by revenue. Global revenue is not publicly available but is estimated to be significantly higher when including all international markets and the grocery business.

Who is Nando's CEO?
Rob Papps serves as Group CEO of Nando's, overseeing global operations from London. Kimberly Grant took over as CEO of Nando's North America in April 2025. The company's leadership team includes regional CEOs responsible for specific markets, with the UK being the largest and most significant market.

Does Nando's franchise?
Nando's operates company-owned restaurants in most markets and does not franchise in most countries. This company-owned model maintains tight quality control and brand consistency but limits expansion speed compared to franchise-based competitors. In some markets, the company uses joint ventures or master franchise agreements, but the majority of restaurants are company-owned.

Nando's Sustainability & Ethics

Nando's publishes sustainability information through its UK website and has made several commitments, though independently verified certifications are limited.

On chicken sourcing, Nando's UK reports that 100% of its chicken is sourced from farms that meet Red Tractor standards, a UK farm assurance scheme. The company states that all its chicken is barn-reared, not caged. Nando's has not adopted a fully free-range policy across all markets, which has drawn some criticism from animal welfare advocates.

The peri-peri chili supply chain is a point of pride for the company. Nando's sources chilies from small-scale farmers in Mozambique, Malawi, and South Africa through its PERi-Farm program. The company states that it works directly with over 1,400 farmers and pays above-market prices. These claims are reported by the company but have not been independently audited by a third-party certification body.

Nando's UK runs a food donation program called "No Chuckin' Our Chicken" (NCOC), launched in 2013. The program donates surplus food to charities. By 2024, the company reported donating over 4.5 million meals to more than 500 charities across the UK and Ireland.

On packaging, Nando's UK has committed to eliminating single-use plastics where possible. The company has switched to paper straws and recyclable packaging for most takeaway items. However, Nando's has not published specific, independently verified targets for packaging reduction or recycled content percentages.

Nando's does not hold B Corp certification. The company is not listed in the B Lab directory. No Leaping Bunny or PETA cruelty-free certifications apply, as Nando's is a restaurant chain, not a personal care brand.

The Enthoven family's complex offshore ownership structure has been the subject of some media scrutiny. Reports by the Guardian and other outlets have examined the family's use of trusts in Luxembourg and Malta. The structures are legal but have raised questions about tax transparency. Nando's has not publicly responded in detail to these reports.

Nando's Recalls & Controversies

Nando's has not been subject to any major food safety recalls. The brand operates a relatively clean record on food safety across its markets.

In 2018, Nando's UK faced a minor controversy when an investigation by the BBC found that some Nando's suppliers used chickens treated with antibiotics. Nando's responded by stating that it was working with suppliers to reduce antibiotic use and that all its chicken met UK food safety standards. The company has since stated that it prohibits the routine use of antibiotics in its chicken supply chain.

Nando's advertising in South Africa has been controversial by design. The brand's ads have addressed xenophobia, political corruption, and racial tensions. A 2019 ad depicting a South African politician as a chicken was pulled after legal threats. These advertising choices are intentional marketing strategies, not accidents, and have generally been well-received by South African consumers while occasionally drawing complaints to advertising regulators.

The offshore ownership structure of the Enthoven family has attracted media attention. In 2017, the Paradise Papers leak revealed details of the family's use of offshore entities in Malta and Luxembourg. The Guardian reported that the structure allowed the family to minimize tax liabilities. Nando's stated that its tax affairs are conducted in accordance with all applicable laws. No regulatory action was taken.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nando's UK used the UK government's furlough scheme to pay staff wages. The company later repaid the furlough money it had received. Some commentators criticized profitable companies for using public funds, though the scheme was designed for exactly this purpose.

No major labor disputes, environmental violations, or regulatory enforcement actions have been documented against Nando's in recent years.
